Chat Settings

Chat settings control how one conversation behaves. Available controls depend on the selected connection and model.

Common controls

  • Chat name: rename the conversation.
  • Instruction: choose custom instructions for the model.
  • Connection and model: switch where the chat sends messages.
  • Streaming: turn streaming responses on or off when supported.
  • Temperature: adjust response creativity when the provider supports it.
  • Output tokens: limit response length.

Model-specific controls

LM Studio v1 may show context length and reasoning controls when the selected model supports them. Context length is separate from output tokens.

Reasoning-capable providers may expose reasoning options. Choose only options supported by the selected model.

Local Knowledge

When Memory is enabled, chat settings can include Local Knowledge options for using relevant on-device memory in a conversation.

Troubleshooting

  • If a setting is missing, the selected provider or model may not support it.
  • If a model is unavailable, use Switch Model or fetch models again from the connection.
  • If requests fail after changing token settings, lower context or output limits.
